If the Nigerian government, companies and individuals can shower MILLIO₦$ on the Super Eagles football players, they sure can do same for inventors. The footballers won gold at the just concluded African Nations Cup, 2013. They were showered with MILLIO₦$; and that's fine. However, how many jobs would be created as a result? If it's ok to shower them with millions of Naira, Dollars or whatever, how much more should we be doing for our Scientists, Inventors, et al? These inventors have the potential of creating millions of JOBS - with the right enabling environment, moral, spiritual and financial support. Stop and think, for a minute.

A Proposal: The Fostering Of Science & Technology In Delta State [Science & Technology Development]

Introduction:
Our beloved State, Delta State, has so much to benefit from Science and Technology. There are lots of blessings, hidden blessings, and obvious, open blessings to be generated from the growth, development, maturation and sustainability of Science and Technology. Numerous ideas and ideals can be unveiled in the process. Every government parastatal, each arm of government stands to gain. Every fabric of our society, all strata of the motherland can profit. Countless possibilities – good possibilities can accrue as a result.
The time, the era, the epoch is imminent. The time is ripe for Delta State to play her role as a standard bearer in the stage of Nigeria’s burgeoning development – her role as torchlight in Nigeria’s renewal and renaissance and by extension, planet Earth’s scientific and technological evolution.
We – the collective “we” that make up this noble State has what it takes to advance, to make progress. The collective, kaleidoscope-we, surely can put heads together, rub minds together. The multicultural, multi-ethnic “we”, can cooperate to ensure the existence of systems and structures that are much needed for Science & Technology to be birthed, groomed and to thrive. We can tap into our God-given creative imagination to think, be innovative, to come up with scientific and technological breakthroughs that would provide answers to our varied problems, problems that hinder or prevent us from enjoying quality lifestyles. These would be answers that would help take care of social, economic, and educational problems that are unique to The Niger-Delta and Nigeria. And other countries can learn from these solutions and adapt or adjust them to meet their own unique needs.
This Ministry of Science & Technology is one that would or should evolve to be self-sustaining, even wealth-generating for the State. This ministry should also partner with other existing governmental ministries and non-governmental organizations both at home and abroad.
It is my most sincere wish and desire to see that the Ministry of Science & Technology is fostered – made to thrive, to shine and to mature. This ministry can be organized, administered and run in a unique way that Deltans would be stimulated to grow psychologically and intellectually. This growth would augment the capacity of the so-called “ordinary man” to address and meet his material needs.
The work of this ministry would contribute to supporting and promoting the much-needed civilizational, social and individual personality growth of people in our many communities. There would be a direct, concerted approach to converting the plenteous natural resources into goods and services. Goods and services that are of lasting value, poverty alleviating, health promoting, pleasure-leisure enhancing, mind stimulating and even soul satisfying.
Together as a people, the privilege is ours to usher in the dawn of a new era. An era where there are viable systems and structures in place to promote the maturation and development of our motherland. In this day, we uphold the principles and purposes of sustainability. Yes, not only growth and development but also sustainability – sustainability and continuity. With commitment and as a people under God, these ideas and ideals are doable.
The process would take years, even decades. And it is noteworthy to say that we have begun to take our first steps, even baby steps. We have begun to lay a solid foundation for work and service. Delta State has begun to build.
Let us now look at some key strategies, postures and methods our Science & Technology ministry can utilize to campaign for and actualize Creativity, Scientific Research, and Technological breakthroughs:
(a) Mass Media: Radio and Television Programs and the World Wide Web.
This would involve discussions, pep talks, speeches, inspirational talks and lectures designed to motivate, inspire and encourage the citizenry, the collective “we”, “we the people” on the need to utilize Science and Technology as key tools to prosperity, growth and sustainable development. The ministry would work to assist people to grasp “the hows and whys” of Science and Technology.
In as much as different professionals and intellectuals may grace these programs, the person of the honorable commissioner would play a prominent and direct role in addressing, talking to and with the populace. He should be one, who embodies the vision, and who can clearly articulate the vision, the goals, achievements, successes, challenges and failures of the ministry. Herein are the true potentials for wisdom and growth.
There has to be a change in the mentality of the masses towards local development of Science & Technology. Our people need to be educated on the “hows” of societal evolution, growth, development, maturation and sustainability; and the role Science & Technology plays here. The power of the media would be harnessed in a bid to actualize this attitudinal change, this mental change, and this value-shift…
The TV broadcasts can start off as a 1 or 2 hour program (weekly). With time, the ministry would secure her own round-the-clock, 24-7 TV Channel. This may become a reality after a 5 or 10-year period.
Its web presence is another tool through which the ministry can educate, inform, and encourage learners and knowledge seekers – to tap into their creative imagination for the purpose of coming up with great technologies, new and better answers to problems; unique scientific and technological solutions to various needs. The website can have links to useful learning resources around the world.
(b) Competitions: The organization of a yearly competition.
The purpose is to help bring out the technologist, the scientist, in people. Prizes would be given out to individuals who have created outstanding technological and scientific inventions. Educational scholarships may also be awarded.
The ministry’s service can also be jeered towards assisting these awarded inventors to secure investments from individuals and big businesses. If the thing invented is to contribute meaningfully to the lives of many, then perforce its mass production is imperative. There would have to be a way of making it available to many, many others. And many times, this involves money. Our people would be encouraged to, “engage themselves” by investing their finances in promising Science and Technology companies. Otherwise, we would always be backward, never really making quality progress.
The ministry may also invest in some of these projects, thereby creating an opportunity for its own revenue generation.
(c) Science Labs: In a bid to promoting the growth, development, maturation and sustainability of Science & Technology, the Ministry of Science & Technology would seek to work in partnership with the Ministry of Education to ensure that each Government Primary and Secondary School and Tertiary Institution in the State have a well-equipped Computer Science Laboratory [Lab]. This can be done through public-private partnership.
Each lab would be equipped with 40 – 50 computers (Personal Computers – PCs), an all-in-one printer (working as a printer, a scanner, and a photocopier), a projector, and a blackboard (or preferably a whiteboard).
One or two “Lab Technicians” – To manage each Computer Lab. These are Lab Technicians who are proficient in PC Troubleshooting, Computer Literacy, Computer Networking, amongst others.
There would be a concerted effort towards a target of installing Internet Connectivity in these schools. The ministry would begin by seeking to establish a laid-down framework for the actualization of High-Speed Internet Connectivity in all Government Schools, statewide.
Each Primary School would have a well-equipped Integrated Science Lab with a dedicated Lab Technician.
Each Secondary School would have well-equipped Physics, Chemistry & Biology Labs with a dedicated Lab Technician (for each Lab).
(d) Technology Incubation Centers: Begin with a pilot program of five (5) centers in five (5) different cities of the State. The goal is to have one (1) Technology Incubation Center in each Local Government Area. Each Center would be used to discover and support Deltans with Technological and Scientific ideas. Office spaces, workshops and/or labs would be allocated to those who are working on inventions or innovations. Each Center would be adequately staffed with professionals skilled in Team-work Dynamics, Business Development, Sales & Marketing, Patent Acquisition, Patent Protection, Technology Development, Research and Development (R & D), Research Methods, Development of Small, Medium and Large Scale Enterprises, Capital (Investment) Acquisition, and Financial Intelligence. These professionals would work with the Inventors/Innovators to ensure that the thing invented is properly assembled and mass produced for the benefit of society – both local and international. Technology Incubation Centers play a pivotal role in enabling new entrepreneurs to have a strong footing to set up their own successful small businesses. These small businesses can grow to become big companies – major players in the global arena. We need homegrown Science and Technology companies. Very, very vital!
(e) Universal High-Speed Internet Service: This is a unique thrust that brings the Internet to the people in the comfort of their schools, offices and homes at reduced, affordable prices. Let us be the Pacesetter State in this Information Age! Another key function of the Delta State Ministry of Science & Technology would be to create a Statewide Broadband Plan. Universal High-Speed Internet Service is very, very important for the development of the Government and peoples of Delta State. It would boost or greatly enhance e-Government, Education, Health, Information Technology, Small Businesses, Job Creation, etc, etc. Practically every area of life would benefit greatly. A State whose citizenry have affordable, round-the-clock High-Speed Internet Service would have a strategic competitive advantage over and beyond States and Countries who do not. We live in a changing world. With a Satellite launched into space, we, Deltans can easily achieve this noble cause. A space Satellite Technology for Statewide High-Speed Broadband Internet access is strongly encouraged and highly recommended. The State can generate revenue from it by having her populace subscribe for service. It may be fully run by the State or deployed through a Public-Private Partnership Program.
(f) Seminars: This involves:
Organizing physical, on-site seminars and conferences in key strategic cities all over the State. These seminars would seek to promote the noble and note-worthy aims and objectives of the ministry. The seminars would be charged with good discussions on Innovations and Inventions in Science and Technology; promoting a Technology culture; building successful and sustainable companies; job creation; etc.
These seminars would be with:
¨ People at the grassroots level – secondary school students e.g. Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists [JETS] clubs.
¨ Intellectuals, academics, professors and students at the higher education levels e.g. Colleges of Education, Polytechnics, and Universities.
¨ The general public, where all are invited.
(g) International Business: This involves:
Working with other countries and partnering with companies, both local and foreign. A major thrust here is to share suggestions and ideas and to encourage foreign investors, businesses and research institutes to come find a home in Delta State.
Fostering an enabling and an enduring environment for foreigners. They are given incentives to come to the State to establish manufacturing companies. Here, we see an environment that suits and sustains the creation of ideas, the testing of findings and the mass production of goods and services that enhance the “common good”.
(h) Continued Matters Arising: Some examples of areas of research, work and service that can take root in our State, Delta State include but not limited to:
Solar Energy.
Space Technology.
Computer Technology, Information Technology.
Agricultural Resources.
Mineral Resources – to foster the development of oil and non-oil mineral industries.
Marine and land plants/herbs in a bid to promoting “a healthy State”. Here, we find answers to many sicknesses and diseases. We have an existing “African Traditional Medicine”. How do we harness the huge potentials in this non-western practice? How do we improve or develop this existing culture? How do we professionally mass-produce, package, and present the various treatments/cures to benefit the greatest number? How do we wisely combine African Traditional Medicine with Western Medicine? How do we take this practice to the next and higher levels? These questions and more needs to be tackled.
It is important to understand that for “the big heart” to shine and thrive, human beings who are committed to using their God-given, inherent creative imagination must serve her. And when we couple our human resources with our natural resources, there is no telling what can be achieved.
The fostering of our unique and distinct Ministry of Science and Technology is posed and poised to augment the success of our democracy. We are talking of a ministry that ventures into the knowable unknowns and reaps dividends of peace, growth, development, maturation and sustainability. Given to us is the power to support, to promote, the utilization of capital – human capital and natural capital (human and natural resources). This CAPITAL can yield DIVIDENDS - great dividends that would bring joy to our people and put a smile on the face of our Creator, Father God.
I thank all for the opportunity granted me to make this (my) presentation. It is a thing of joy to know that together, we can join hearts and hands to make our society a better world to live in. DUMP CABLE!!
You can connect your computer to your wide, flat screen TV! Viola! The world before you there! I have a DVD/BLU-RAY player by Sonny that has WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) capabilities... It connects to my wireless Internet router. Through this device, Sonny offers access to some websites like youtube and other services... Some are free; some are not... With YOUTUBE alone, I can gain access to a lot of stuffs - at no cost... Sweet! I ‘dumped’ cable long time ago! LOL!
A key sentence to remember when shopping is, "I'm looking for an INTERNET ENABLED TV and an INTERNET ENABLED DVD/BLU-RAY player". You would save a lot of money in the long run...
You need an Internet enabled TV (a TV with a port to which you can connect your computer. For the connection, you may need a VGA, DVI, USB cable or something else, depending on the kind of port on your computer and TV). You can watch shows/comedy/movies/news, etc @ no cost from sites like Hulu.com, youtube.com, ESPN's site, for all kinds of sports, etc, etc. IT GETS better with a new kind of DVD/BLU-RAY player that comes with WLAN (Internet capability). You connect this to your TV and link it wirelessly to your [wireless] Internet router. This way, you can have access to different Internet-based services without having to hook up your computer... Here in the U.S, more and more people are saying goodbye to cable TV. #PocketThatChange. LOL!

Why can't Nigeria harness and develop her natural resources??
"YES, we have gold, silver, crude oil, silicon, etc, etc. What if the WEST leaves Nigeria, takes away all her tools, equipments, machines, computers, technocrats, technologies... What will then happen to those "natural resources"? What do u think Nigeria wld do? What wld d citizens of Nigeria do?" FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
y can't Nigeria harness and develop her natural resources - from raw goods to finished goods? y is Nigeria not investing time and money in home-grown intellectual property, inventions, Science & Tech Industries, etc... y is Nigeria not building the tools, machines, and equipments needed to process the raw materials to finished goods?
y is Nigeria not excelling in technology? y rely on d WEST or d EAST to come do all these things for us? Besides, when they turn around and rip us off, we open our mouths and begin to complain... Where r our OWN home-grown research institutes?? Are they competitive globally?? What is the problem with us??
A major reason y Nigerian professionals excel abroad BUT fail to replicate same in their country is this: DISUNITY... and i may add: TRIBALISM... NEPOTISM... They may excel individually and work well w/ foreigners abroad... But bring these same ppl under 1 umbrella and u begin to hear stories. And we r 'cursed' w/ visionless leaders who r not interested in funding RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT in Science & Tech!
We don't have a "prevailing culture" that encourages and celebrates scientific and technological inventions. Hmmm... Very important!
Also, without apologies (and speaking soberly), i think Nigerians r not pushing themselves enough to tap into their God-given creative imaginations when it comes to inventions and innovations in Science & Tech... d % that does is just too, too low...
And we r 'cursed' w/ visionless leaders who r not interested in funding RESEARCH in Science & Tech!

Hi! Thank you so much for taking out time to watch this little video, this documentary on, “The Water Bicycle”. This project has come to pass because of collaboration – joint-conscious cooperative effort on the part of different individuals. I’ve noticed something as a Technology Developer: for a technology to see the light of day, there’s gat to be a joint-conscious cooperative effort amongst the people, participants concerned. Scientists and technologists gat to work together in unity, in humility and in love.
There’s gat to be some ethical considerations being placed in the foray in order for a scientific discovery to be successful. In order for a technological breakthrough to see the light of day, to get to the hands of the end users, to add value to the lives of people, world over. So, it is very important for unity, for cooperation to really be in the forefront. It’s not enough that we have knowledge, that we have intelligence; we gat to learn to work together as a team. We gat to learn to cooperate to make things happen. These are some key lessons we can draw even from my personal experience as a Technology Developer.
Before I let you go, I will like to really say one or two things from some key observations. Earlier on, I made it clear to you that we are very passionate in seeing the actualization of the growth, development, maturation, and sustainability of Science and Technology in 3rd world countries. Looking at the Black race for example, we see wonderful contributions in the arts, also in the sciences. However, in the area of the sciences, the percentage or the number of Black people contributing immensely to the growth and development of Science and Technology has not gotten to that critical mass in my opinion, sincerely speaking. I tend to ask myself, “Why is it so?” It’s important that we look into this because the Black race makes a huge chunk of the 3rd World Emerging Economies.
“Why is it so?” I’ve lived with Black people in different parts of the world: in the Caribbean, in Europe, in North America and obviously here in Nigeria, West Africa. I’ve observed one or two things. And I think, I can say one or two things based on my observations as to why it is so. My opinions are mine, my humble opinions. However as a Black man, I think I can share my heart to my Black brothers and sisters and also to other people of other races – the Caucasians, the Yellow race, etc in a bid to see how we can really work together to see that there is a change not only for the good of Black people but also for the good of other races because really we are all in this together, we share a common humanity. We are brothers and sisters, children, under God. From my observation, I think one of the reasons why the number or percentage of Black people involved in Science and Technology has not reached the critical mass is that of unity and cooperation. Again, I want to say I speak sincerely. This is kind of a sensitive issue to some people. However, I would bear my heart out. We gat to make, we gat to forge a way forward for the good of all.
I speak sincerely, in love. “Unity, Cooperation”! – in order for 3rd World Emerging Economies in Africa to see that there is growth and development in Science and Technology, the Scientists and the Technologists and other people, other interested parties: the government, non-governmental organizations, individuals, family members, etc have to learn to work together in unity. There’s gat to be that support, that emotional, psychological support for Scientists and Technologists. That desire to give a part on the back, to cheer up a Scientist or a Technologist and to say, “Go on brother, I wish you well in your work”. Don’t say things like, “Oh, it can’t happen, we can’t do it”. Then, Scientists and Technologists in the field should stop the bickering and the fightings. Let’s work together, let’s be united, let’s be focused. “We can make it happen!”
Another key reason I think, Science and Technology is not thriving so much in 3rd world countries most especially in places dominated by our Black brothers and sisters is that, for some reason, we are not willing or we have not been able to tap into our God-given creative imagination. That desire to tap into the God-given creative imagination in order for Science and Technology to thrive is not really there or it’s there but it’s just dormant.
Like I said earlier, in the arts we’re doing well, in entertainment, “Wow, kudos” and that’s good, we should keep it up. In sports we are excelling; it’s wonderful. I mean, am proud of my Black brothers and sisters. We thank God for our lives. However, in the area of Science and Technology, we gat to be willing, desirous and keen to tap into our God-given creative imagination. We can be creative in the areas of Science and Technology. My encouragement is that we should be willing to do something consciously – to tap into it, tap into and make things happen.
Sure there’s been other forces that may have worked against Black people in the past. Some people, some parties having there own selfish interest, you know, invading our space, our land and plundering. That has also affected us adversely. That is a fact. However, I believe we can turn the tide around, we can move from where we now find ourselves – despite the odds, despite the obstacles, the persecutions, the oppressions, the enslavement, the plunderings… Despite these odds, we can shake off the dust from our bodies, as it were and seek to make progress.
We can set up workable systems and structures that would support innovations and inventions in the areas of Science and Technology. The government, our governments, various governments have their roles to play. Also, non-governmental organizations and private companies have their roles to play. And individuals have their own responsibilities. It is important that we take these things into cognizance. And if we work together as a team, tap into our God-given creative imaginations, provide the necessary enabling environment, put systems and structures in place that would ensure viable organizational structures to thrive, then we can really do so well in the area of Science and Technology and contribute to the growth and development of not only our nations [in the 3rd world] but also the world at large.
We have our quota. Are we doing much? Are we really contributing our quota to the growth and development of planet Earth for the good of all, for the good of Black people, for the good of the Asians – the Yellow race, for the good of the White people – the Caucasians, for the good of the mixed races – the half cast, quarter cast and all. For the good of all and sundry – those I’ve mentioned and those I’ve not mentioned. For the good of practically every human being on the planet. Please, let’s consider these things and let’s search our hearts and create viable path-maps to success.
I thank you so much for your time and I believe that together we will make a difference. Please, do not misunderstand anything I have said so far. I speak sincerely, in hopeful anticipation that we would be stirred up and do things for the good of all. Whatever we can do to improve our intelligence, let’s do it. What can we do to maximize the usage of our brains?
Most of us just work with 10% of our brains – not just Black people but White people also, the Yellow race also. Everybody on Earth, majority of humans living on Earth today makes use of 10% of their brains! What can we do as human beings to actually make use of the 100% of our brains? What has to be done? What do we have to do to our DNA & RNA structures? What do we have to do to our gene pool? What do we have to do to our health, to our minds, to our souls, to our bodies to see that we really maximize the brain that this God has given to us? It is important! How can we take our intelligence to the next level?
“Oh, we’ve been created; we are like this”, you may say. But what can we do, where do we go from here? I’m persuaded in my heart that God has entrusted a lot in us. There are so many giftings and abilities that have been lying dormant in the human race, in the human specie for many millennia. What do we have to do to activate these dormant traits and attributes? These are key questions we should think about. These are key questions we should ponder upon.
I believe in the plants and the herbs we have out there: there are some chemicals that can help us in some ways. We can develop some kind of recipe to help improve our intelligence. I believe that. I believe we can actually, with the power of our will, our thoughts, our words, and prayers activate the dormant genes within us. I believe that we can actually do better than we are doing today. This inventor from Malawi built an electricity-generating windmill from spare parts, working from rough plans he found in a book in a small library near his village.

i think d TICs r still there. we have one in Warri. i spent some valuable time there in '07/'08 in my bid to promoting Science n Technology... i think the Nigerian masses need to be sensitized of the gr8 need for Nigerians themselves 2b directly involved in inventions/innovation NOW... YES, we shd put pressure on d govt. we shd also put pressure on ourselves... e.g. we have rich ppl who don't know wot to do w/ their money... Let's educate dem - they can invest in research, in inventions... in TECHNOLOGY ENTREPRENEURS. Thanks, bros!
2 Nigerian students invent a generator that doesn’t use fuel...
Excerpts: “According to them, the generator does not emit any toxic waste neither is it a threat to human health.
They said, "We used magnetic flux to generate electricity which the conventional magnet cannot. It consists of a shaf fixed with eight neodymium magnets, which rotates when an initial current is passed through the field coils. The electricity is then passed from the copper coil to a step-up transformer which steps up the power voltage from 32 volts to 200 volts to power the output of the generator."
